Education and Training
Vela is a Mental Health Counselor based in New York City. She received her B.A in experimental Psychology from Knox College and both of her M.A and Ed.M in Counseling Psychology from Columbia University’s Teachers College. Vela has been focusing on advancing her clinical skills by providing clinical services in community clinics and private agencies. In the past, she worked closely with first generation immigrants and their families as well as other minority groups. In addition to English, Vela also offers sessions in Mandarin Chinese.
Vela works collaboratively with her clients addressing issues like self-identity exploration, relationships, family dynamics, career anxiety, and life changes. Her clinical work is based on a psychodynamic relational model. In addition, she also tailors her treatment to clients’ needs with evidence-based practices. Vela loves building trust and connection with her clients. Her commitment to the helping profession comes from compassion and love for the community. She is excited to be in the lifelong learning journey with her clients by creating a safe space and guiding people through difficult times.
